How Thick Should My New Asphalt Driveway Be?

The matter of how thick your new asphalt driveway should be depends on a variety of factors that focus on the existing surface, which means there isn’t one simple answer. It’s important to note, however, that asphalt thickness is critical when it comes to your driveway serving you well for well into the future. A well-constructed asphalt driveway is not only a welcome convenience but can also increase the overall value of your home. Our experienced Pennsylvania asphalt driveway pros at Johnny’s Asphalt have the expertise necessary to outfit your home with a beautifully constructed asphalt driveway.

New Construction

If your asphalt driveway is part of a new construction, there are two layers to consider. The project will begin with a 2.5-inch binder, and this will be topped with a layer of asphalt that is 1.5 inches thick. The binder coats the loose material below, fills in any voids, and provides foundational strength.

The bottom layer affords the foundation necessary for heavy equipment to come in and apply the top layer of asphalt. This two-step process ensures that the upper layer adheres to the lower layer and, as a result, moves with it, which makes the driveway incredibly durable. Generally, new construction driveways have the longest average lifespans.

Existing Pavement that Is Being Resurfaced

If your driveway project involves resurfacing existing pavement with asphalt, the asphalt being laid should be at least 2 inches thick. This assumes, however, that all the following apply to the existing pavement:

Sometimes, the condition of existing pavement can’t be identified until the top layers are removed, but often, signs of disrepair are evident at the surface. If the existing pavement is too far gone, resurfacing won’t be an option. At this point, excavation and replacement are generally required.

Existing Gravel Surface

Paving over an existing gravel surface can be a good option, but it requires a thicker asphalt overlay, and the thickness required depends upon several factors. To ensure that you end up with a smooth and durable asphalt driveway, the following prep work must be performed:

From 4 to 6 inches of asphalt overlay is generally suggested.
